Lessons in loss

In the way this was planned

you were meant to learn through contrast:

the throne you once nestled in

          as you sipped your tea,

and the indifference you now wander in

as you wonder what became of me.

My path was to teach through sameness:

     to explore blue in skies,

     green in forests,

     to teach worth through permanence.

Yours was the way of loss,

     of determined sand –

          the horse, departing a field

because it was not planted on its terms

is a horse destined to learn the difference

               between what doesn’t leave

          and what seldom returns.
